Hens A Laying

As the weather slowly begins to change our girls are spending their days completely outside more and more. The increased activity and sunlight is starting to yield more eggs now as at least 2 of our other girls have started laying once again.

Right now that puts the number of laying hens at either 3 or 4. I know my Easter Egger isn't laying because we have no blue/green eggs. Soon I hope, soon. Our foster hen, Tango, remains a constant daily layer who's eggs are very plump and squat. Her eggs don't fit in an egg crate so they make up the majority of what you see here in this pic. The thinner more pink eggs are coming from our Australorps I'm pretty sure.

Looks like it's time to break out that egg cookbook. I'm going to have a surplus soon. =)

Our easter-egger layed in January for about a week then went on break again until the end of February. We've been getting one a day for the last week and a half. Brown one day, green the next. I don't know who is laying the brown eggs, but I'm glad to have them.

A friend just called to tell me they got 2 eggs today...their FIRST! He was quite excited and actually dialed our number by mistake, when trying to call his wife, who was out with my partner. :) An exciting time for them. Meanwhile, we are getting 2-3 eggs a day from our 3 hens. We've not had a stop in production at all...can't quite believe it. The consistent non-stop layers all through the winter were our Sex Link hens. They have some mightily good genes! :)

That's awesome Mike! The only one that lays on a near daily basis for us is our foster hen, Tango. We thought she was a Rhode Island Red but it turns out she s Sex-Link ISA Brown (The Rhode Island Red/White Family).

Now that 2 of our other girls are laying with more on the way it should turn out to be a good year.
