The rain on the weekends has put me at a disadvantage to coop maintenance however. I'm a little overdue to change my bedding and do a spring cleaning on the hen house and run. My deep layer bedding method gives me many months of use at a time without the need to change but I'm working on a batch from October and it had a lot of pine shavings mixed in. Those pine shavings are creating tons of dust and it's just time to go. I'll be using only hay/straw with a mix of Sweet PDZ on occasion to help ensure moisture is kept in check.
I also need to do a few modifications to the coop after our first winter. A few sags in the wood and a few things that need to be shaved down so they fit better. I need to upgrade the quality of hinges I'm using on the hen house door as well because one has broken already and the door doesn't fit like it should. But all in all I'm still very happy with the way things turned out on the coop and I think we'll get many more years to come.
So, here's to hoping that Spring will actually arrive and stay!
